Both factory Ducati riders Dovizioso and team-mate Jorge Lorenzo, plus Movistar Yamaha’s Maverick Vinales, were tipped as victory contenders in the dry at the British round which the Italian rider fears is a key moment in the 2018 MotoGP title fight lost.

“It’s a pity we couldn’t do the race at Silverstone because we were very competitive and we missed a good opportunity to pick up some points on Marquez,” Dovizioso said.

But the 2017 MotoGP championship runner-up remains ‘very confident’ going into the Misano round thanks to timely boosts from recent in-season tests at the Italian track and Aragon – with both circuits hosting the next two world championship rounds.

“We are excited about Misano because the two tests there and at Aragon in the last few weeks went really well,” he said. “We confirmed that we are competitive on both tracks, so we are now very confident about this weekend.

“The San Marino GP is an important event for us and we want to do well there: last year we got onto the podium in third place, but this year we’re looking to get something more.”

Dovizioso is currently fourth in the MotoGP world championship, one point behind Ducati team-mate Jorge Lorenzo in third, but 72 points split the Italian rider from championship leader Marquez with seven rounds remaining.
