Championship leader Cal Crutchlow was a promising third, 0.09s back of Viñales, with front row starter Andrea Iannone fourth and Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro a much improved fifth after a disastrous Saturday afternoon.

Andrea Dovizioso was sixth with Alex Rins (seventh) heading the Ducati trio of Jack Miller (eighth), Danilo Petrucci (ninth) and Jorge Lorenzo (tenth).

Valentino Rossi was 1.7s off Marquez’s quickest pace and could place no higher than eleventh, while regular podium man Johann Zarco was 13th.
