Reigning champion now 14 points clear after Oulton Park success

Defending champion Tommy Hill won the opening race of the sixth round of the British Superbike Championship at Oulton Park. The Swan Yamaha rider, who had earlier qualified on pole position, increased his championship lead to 14 points ahead of Sunday's two races at the Cheshire circuit. Title rival Michael Laverty crashed his Samsung Honda early in the race and that left Hill to battle it out with the Tyco Suzuki of Josh Brookes and Shane Byrne on the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki. As the chasing pack took evasive action to avoid Laverty that allowed Hill to pull clear and by the chequered flag he led by 4.5 seconds. Brookes held on to second ahead of Byrne with the two riders occupying the same positions in the championship standings. Hill's team-mate Noriyuki Haga claimed fourth in the race ahead of James Westmoreland, Tommy Bridewell (Supersonic BMW), Chris Walker (Pr1mo Bournemouth Kawasaki), Peter Hickman (Buildbase BMW), Graeme Gowland and Barry Burrell (Buildbase BMW).
